POMOR Course Outline

1st term: Winter semester (October  – January)

In order to help you, we arrange an orientation program during the first term at the beginning of September.  The program covers essential information for studying POMOR and for orientation at the Saint Petersburg State University. We hope that you will then be ready to begin your studies here with confidence and with many new friends and contacts. At the orientation program you will meet former POMOR students and staff who will be available to help and advise you.

  • Ocean basins, sediments and climate change
  • High seas and coastal waters oceanography
  • Polar and marine ecosystem: structure, functioning and vulnerability
  • Intensive English course and soft skills


2nd term: Summer semester (February  – September)

  • Natural resources
  • Processes in the coastal zone and environmental management
  • Periglacial environment  
  • Soft skills
  • Field practice

Lectures, seminars, practical training, excursions and examinations are held by academic staff from the Saint Petersburg State University, Hamburg University, Bremen University, Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, All-Russian Research Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the World Ocean (VNIIOkeangeologia), Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, Ecological Research Station of Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology of Ural Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemuende 

3d term: Winter semester (October  – March)

This semester takes place at the Hamburg University of or at one of the partner universities (Bremen, Kiel, and Potsdam):

  • Hamburg University: M.Sc. Integrated Climate System Sciences (max. 8 participants)
  • Bremen University: M.Sc. Marine Biology (max. 2-3 participants)
  • Bremen University: M.Sc. Marine Geology (subject to agreement)
  • Christian Albrechts University of Kiel: M.Sc. Marine Geosciences (no restrictions)
  • Potsdam University: M.Sc. Geosciences/Geology (no restrictions)


4th term: Summer semester (April – September)

During the last study semester students are writing their master thesis supervised by a Russian and a German advisor. After the successful master thesis defence students are awarded the Master degree of Saint Petersburg State University and Master of Science of Hamburg University. The degree award usually takes place in October at Saint Petersburg State University.
